2023 Albums Thing #060 - Glen Campbell “Greatest Hits”

Another short one today as the only reason this is in my collection is because I’ve not yet come across a 7” of “Wichita Lineman”. As much as I understand Mr Campbell”s guitar virtuosity and the part he played in LA’s great session band the Wrecking Crew (responsible for literally hundreds of hits, look ‘em up) his take on Country is a little too smooth for my taste.

However “Wichita Lineman” is a doozie. Written by Jimmy Webb in 1968 and recorded by Campbell with assistance from the Wrecking Crew it was a worldwide hit. Webb has told how it was written by request of Campbell who wanted a “place song” to follow up his single “By The Time I Get To Phoenix”.
